The beautiful Charleston Battery that overlooks the Charleston Harbor was built in 1670 as a defensive seawall and promenade for the city. During the War of 1812, large-caliber guns were placed in the area currently known as White Point Gardens to defend against the British, and during the Civil War, the Confederacy set their cannons in White Point Gardens to protect against Union forces arriving by sea. These cannons stand today as a reminder of the rich history of the city of Charleston.
The extraordinarily grand and carefully preserved Antebellum homes that line The Battery are a popular tourist attraction. On a Charleston History Tour from Sandlapper Water Tours, you can view these homes and the Battery’s parks and gardens from the water, the ways visitors (and invaders) to Charleston have viewed them for hundreds of years!
